We are looking across materials, design, manufacturing and consumption to identify where we can make even the smallest difference that benefits our planet.

We aim to educate and inspire our customers, encouraging responsible shopping practices while also guiding the publishing industry towards making changes for a greener future.

The Printing and Publishing Industry

The printing and publishing industry has been tarnished by a reputation for environmental and health concerns. This perception largely arises from traditional printing techniques, which use heavy metals and harmful chemicals in the ink production process, as well as paper manufacturing which contributes to a significant portion of worldwide industrial deforestation. With a family history deeply rooted in publishing, we recognise the need for significant changes and our responsibility to implement better decisions.

Our Pledge: 1 BOOK PURCHASED = 1 TREE PLANTED

We plant a tree for every notebook purchase. On a global scale, trees serve as significant climate regulators. They lock away greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, in their structure, effectively removing them from the atmosphere and decelerating the process of global warming. Additionally, trees control the climate by absorbing and filtering the sun's radiant energy, which leads to reduced wind speeds and the cooling of the air as they release moisture.

We have partnered with JUST ONE TREE, a UK-based environmental organisation that focuses on planting trees in Indonesia, Brazil, Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya, Nepal, Haiti and Zambia.

By collaborating with JUST ONE TREE, we're not only supporting reforestation in critical areas but also nurturing local communities. Through sustainable agriculture, education, and income-generating opportunities, this alliance enables us to positively impact both environmental sustainability and community development with a single, straightforward action.

Our Materials

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond planting trees and aiding communities. At CAUSEBOOK, we're continually exploring innovative ideas to positively influence our planet. While we acknowledge that we are not perfect, our ambition is to constantly evolve and inspire change. This ethos is deeply embedded in our choice of materials:

Binding - CAUSEBOOK provides singer-sewn and saddle-stitched notebooks as a greener alternative to conventional glued-binding notebooks. Both binding techniques are generally recognised for being more environmentally friendly, involving lower energy consumption and fewer toxic substances.

Ink - At CAUSEBOOK, we're conscious of the environmental footprint left by traditional printing inks. That's why we've committed to using only vegetable-based inks across all our lithographic products. These inks are derived from renewable resources and are a low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) alternative to petroleum-based inks, reducing harmful emissions and making recycling easier.

Paper - CAUSEBOOK notebooks are made of high-end FSC-certified paper. FSC-certified papers are sourced from well-managed forests that adhere to strict environmental and social standards. FSC certification ensures that the wood and paper products are sourced legally, reducing the risk of supporting illegal logging or deforestation.

We remain committed to exploring opportunities for specification improvements, consistently aiming for more climate-conscious enhancements when it comes to materials.

Our Production

Our notebooks are made in the UK, and entrusted to suppliers who practice responsible manufacturing. They operate with a clear commitment to the environment, reflecting our values of integrity and stewardship on every CAUSEBOOK notebook we produce.
